I don't think that Fergie will appoint a new club captain out of respect for Nev and Ryan. But i believe that week in week out,the armband should go to Rio.After him,i will suggest a dark horse:Fletcher. He might not shout a lot but he will bring a calmness to the team.

One of the most successful seasons in the history of Manchester United came with Rio Ferdinand as captain and he also played a major role in it. In my opinion he was the only person in world football that came close to Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of form and consistency that season (2007/2008).

Yes, give the captaincy to Rooney now.
But now. It doesn’t matter what happens with Rio he is our captain. You should know Fergie. But Rooney as a vice captain ? Rio not playing, Giggsy not playing, Rooney takes it.

Haha! Maybe Ronaldo ??? ))

Franco Mizzi June 8, 2009
Don't shoot me. But I remember that not so long ago a certain Frenchman was banned for 10 months and there was some uncertainty weather King Eric wanted to return to us & the English game. The gaffer pulled of a master stroke (genius) and convinced him that he was so important to the club that he would make him captain and so the story goes. After that Eric changed, still brilliant but disciplinned, and the rest is history. Well now Cristiano is captain for Le Seleceo (Portugal) and making him captain just might do the trick.

Just a thought.

Franco you are leaving dangerously aren't you?Just kidding.I would have been in favor of Ronaldo but it's hard to do it for someone who might not be at the club 2-3 years down the line.Rio and Rooney will be here for life and that's why they are safer bets.Ronaldo could have been captain though.

Agree with Rio and Rooney (VCpt). On the subject of captains.............Does anyone know the previous captains since the Premier League started ? It will be helpful in my MUFC database.G Neville,Keane,Cantona,Giggs etc all wore the armband at some time I recall.

Fletch. The lad has been at United 12 years now and has learnt from the best. He has also worked his arse off and has a top attitude.

If not Rooney.

I want to see Rio as the captain. He's got the experience, he's English and he will be playing for us for at least 4 more years I reckon. We need a captain which is used in every game, Neville has found it hard to break into the starting eleven. I say we use Rio as our main captain, Giggs and Nev as vice captains. When Rio retires Rooney should get the captaincy for sure...

Is Fletch a shoe in starter? I wouldn't be so sure that he is, Rio is the the real only option and he is the right man for the job, if he can stay fit.

Our captain should be a fully fit player who always plays at the same level of passion and a winner who hates losing and he must have the enough experience to deal with any situation and knows how to motivate players .the most important thing is that he knows how to deal with referees . I wont be happy if i saw our captain swearing at referees for every single decision. Rooney still needs a year or two to learn how to control his anger .rio will have the same injury proplems next season but i'd opt for him .ryan will not play as much he is captaining only when he starts .rio after him.if he doesnt have injury proplems i would have opted for HARGREAVES i like his personality and workrate he is a winner and he controls himself on the pitch and and has enough experience .

I also had the quite same idea for Ronnie, but his transfer drama is a bit too discomforting for a captain.

Rio is my first choice currently, then Rooney as he told us he wants the armband.

I also dont think Gary/Giggsy/Scholesy need the armband anymore, as they already command respect and have the unspoken authority as seniors. Nobody questions them except SAF.

I'm not saying that it should happen because when Rio is fit hands down, no questions that he should be our captain. But the Ronaldo option. If he was to be made captain i really do think it would cut out all the shit from his game. He'd do the tracking back and quit his bitching and moaning, if you're talking about a player who consistantly comes up with the goods and hates losing.... he's the one.

I would also like to see Rio as our captain but i'm not sure if he'll be fit for a complete season. So for me if it's not rio then fletcher or rooney. Fletcher because of his calmness and rooney for his aggression . It'd be like fire and ice.

My initial thought was 'why not Ronaldo?' He's our most talented player and has the number to be our Raul ;-) Looks like he's going to be deployed as a striker more often now too. The Cantona precedent suggests that it just might work.

Ferdinand. For the fact that he plays 30 something games a season and is a regular starter. You cant have your captain on the bench half of the games

Excluding Nev, Giggs, Scholes & VDS ...I would like Rio and probably Vidić as Vice ..i think Rio is at the right age and got the temperament & leadership to captain.

Ferdinand > Vidić > * > Carrick > Flecther > ....Rooney.
* ..i would add Wes & Hargreaves if there fit & maybe Berbatov there.

.
Age Oder its like ...
VDS (38), Giggs (35), Nev (34), Scholes (34), Rio (30), Wes (29), Hargreaves ( 28), Berbatov (28), Park (28), O'Shea (28), Evra (28), Carrick (27), Vidić (27), Foster (26), Fletcher (25), Tevez (25), Ronaldo (24) ...Rooney (23).

.
am only one that thinks Rooney still pretty down the pecking order for the armband? as much we admire Rooney the player ..i still think hes got quite abit to go as for being captain.

Gary should remain Club Captain as long as he is at the club. The players need a Captain who plays nearly all the time and who has experience of the job. As far as I am concerned the Team captain should be Rio and the Vice-captain should be Ronaldo. Rio has had experience of the job as vice captain of England and captain of United many times on the field. he speaks well and he is respected. Ronaldo is now becoming one of our long serving players believe it or not! i feel he became a much bettert team player when he became Captain of Portugal and the job made him a better allround player. he is one of those people with whom responsibility sits easily. i don't think that Rooney is ready and the job might detract from his playing

Eleven... on your own mate. Rooney is right up there, i dont think age has too much to do with it, Rooney has more than enough experience and this last season has deffo seen a big change in his temprament too. Get Rooney of the wing, play him in his best position and we'll see him running the pitch.

Ferdinand ought to win the armband hands down for me.. He takes care of the young players' mistakes on the pitch, reads the game very well and of course, leads by example. If his back problems persist, then I'd hand it to Fletcher in his absence.. I agree with costas as fletch brings calmness and composure to the side.

Fergie will not strip Nev and Giggsy of the captaincy. See what happened when Robbo and Brucey were no longer playing every game; they were still club captains.

But eventually, i hope,
Rio > Rooney > Fletcher

By definition, it has to be Gary Neville, but, as he never plays anymore, the logical option would be Ryan Giggs or Rio Ferdinand.

I remember Spurs having a club captain, and a team captain, so with that in mind...

Club Captain: Gary Neville
Club Vice-Captains: Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes
Team Co-Captains: Cristiano Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand

Of course, when we win 19 and 4 (hopefully next season), Giggs and Scholes would lift the trophy, seniority and all.

There are too many people in here overrating Fletcher. Fletcher is a very valuable squad-player, but I'm sad to say he won't ever win us the champions league... As for captain... Neville and Giggs are fairly intelligent and should know when to say stop. Rooney should be the captain, but I feel that he can wait a couple of seasons and leave it to Rio. Giggs, Scholes and Neville should be the 3rd, 4th and 5th alternative.

Many players in the squad have the experience as a captain although they're quite young. Most of them wear the armband for their country like berba for bulgaria, ronaldo for portugal, vida for serbia, fletcher for scotland and rio for england. It's true that rooney never lead the england squad(is it? please correct me if i'm wrong) but I think he has the quality required to lead our young squad. So Rio for the armband and Rooney as vice-captained is a good choice. Haha, maybe Sir Alex will give ronaldo a role to make him stays...who knows what the future holds, let's wait & see (Ronnie style)...
