The club has today confirmed that the South Stand will be renamed after Sir Bobby Charlton and this will be unveiled on April 2nd when Manchester United play Everton.

The official website points out that this year marks the 60th anniversary of Charlton making his debut. Why would the club not wait until October then, with Charlton playing his first game for the club on October 6th 1956 against Charlton Athletic?

Wayne Rooney is just five goals away from equalling Charlton’s record as the club’s all-time top scorer. Maybe the club want Charlton’s achievements acknowledged before then?

Or maybe the club want to show respect to Charlton before Jose Mourinho is appointed as manager? Charlton has regularly criticised Mourinho and claimed he isn’t a suitable manager for a club like United, so the club are trying to soften the blow of ignoring his opinion?

Either way, it’s great that Charlton’s legendary status is being recognised.
