After playing for United for five years, Wilf McGuinness replaced Jimmy Murphy as our Reserve team manager. A year after we won the European Cup, McGuinness replaced a retiring Sir Matt Busby as first team manager.

Busby was appointed as general manager of the club but was required to step back in to manage the team when McGuinness was sacked just over a year later. McGuinness went back to coaching the Reserves until the end of the season before he left the club for Greek side Aris Thessaloniki.

After Moyes’ difficult start to the season, McGuinness has claimed that our new manager is capable of making a success out of his time at United.

“David will be able to handle this,” he said. “A couple of wins and he will start to move in the right direction again. Even though you could say David has come into it cold, he has a lot of management experience under his belt. He is his own man and has brought his own people with him. It’s a tough job, a big club, and I wasn’t the only manager to find that. But I never regretted it, and neither will David.”
